ssh and scp - my most used commands

ssh & scp are my most used commands once I started playing around with my homeserver. ssh I use it to login remotely to the server, issuing a command like this - ssh username@SERVERIP -p PORTNUM For security measures, I have disabled root logins and changed the default port 22 to something else. Those settings are configurable under this file - /etc/ssh/sshd_config and look for the PermitRootLogin and Port entries respectively.

Hugo Cheatsheet

This page will always be updated to reflect Hugo cheatsheet as I come across them and actually use them. Recently I edited the theme I am using. I acknowledge and thank the author of the theme, but I don’t like the theme author advertising itself on every footer of the site! For that I had to edit - themes/theme-name/layouts/partials/footer.html Another place I don’t like is the webserver logs showing what theme I am using when it gets the CSS.

TFSA New Strategy

Now that I have maxxed out my TFSA contribution room for 2017 last Friday, I need to make sure that I don’t over contribute! Over contributing has a 1% penalty every month, and I don’t like paying penalties! Those penalties can be used somewhere else, like investing! First thing first, I need to stop / remove all the automatic contributions on my TFSA index funds. That is fairly easy to do, just login to my bank account and remove all the pre-authorized contributions.

Goodbye Uptime!

It’s been a week since I built the home server, and so far here is the uptime - But I have to pull the plug, as I have additional hardware (all donations) coming in the way. I’ve got 2 more incoming laptops and my existing surge protector only has 1 more free outlet, it can’t accomodate 2 more laptops. With that said, I plan on making a load balanced http server once the additonal hardware kicks in, plus maybe a headless kvm / vmware server hosting Windows7 VM accessed thru RDP / VNC by a thinclient!

Apache Logs

After merely a few hours that my site is up and running, I decided to check the apache logs to see if there are any suspicious activities. Scouring through the log files, everything looks normal except for these entries - 120.211.23.242 - - [23/Nov/2017:04:42:23 -0500] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 8499 "-" "masscan/1.0" 120.211.23.242 - - [23/Nov/2017:04:42:24 -0500] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 8499 "-" "masscan/1.0" 120.211.23.242 - - [23/Nov/2017:04:42:25 -0500] "GET / HTTP/1.

TFSA Friday

Tomorrow is a TFSA Friday! Every 2 weeks Friday I contribute to my TFSA (Tax Free Savings Account). Don’t let the acronym fool you, it is not a merely savings account like what I initially thought it was. Instead it is an umbrella of different financial products where the investments can grow Tax-Free! I’ve started reading up on it as early as 2015. Initially my TFSA back then only comprised of a HISA (High Interest Savings Account) and a GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificate).
