2017 Boxing Day

Boxing day is the day after Christmas where numerous sales are going on for several days. It is also a holiday, so people can spend the entire day shopping LOL! For this Boxing Day, I decided to work again just like last year’s. It is a holiday, so the rate is time-and-a-half. I’ve decided to work while kids and wife are still asleep, and then spend lunch time with them and do a little shopping.

Android Custom ROM Xenon HD

Recently I semi-bricked my old Xperia flagship phone. Semi-brick as it still powers ON but Android does not load. After so many trial and error, I was able to boot to custom recovery TWRP and revive the phone! I’m so happy as I now have 2 Android phones that will complement one another. Both will only have data only plans and this Xperia flagship phone will be my backup for VoIP.

Reviving an Xperia Flagship Phone

My first Android phone is a Cherry Mobile Flare S100, a rebranded phone from China. The reason I decided to use this is because it is cheap, and at that time I don’t know if Android will stick to me. It was still Android Ice Cream Sandwhich (ICS) at that time, the fusion between Android tablet (Honeycomb) and Android phone (Gingerbread). At that time there were two separate branches of Android - one for tablets and one for phones.

2weeks with VoIP.ms

I’ve been using VoIP (Voice over IP) for quite sometime now. I got fed up with the local telco offerings here in Canada, and decided to ditch them for VoIP. I’ve been with Anveo since Nov 2016 but recently switched to VoIP.ms. I started with Anveo as you can signup for FREE and cheapest minimum balance is 15USD. Incoming / outgoing calls are 0.01cents per minute and 0.50cents per month to retain number.

Can’t believe that a regular core2duo 4GB RAM laptop with CentOS7 can do the trick in hosting a static website generated by Hugo! So many things have happened since then - from WordPress to Hugo from full LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) stack to Apache for static sites from HTTP to HTTPS Hugo Markdown language with inline HTML enabled categories and tags enabled keywords for SEO (search engine optimization) enabled sidebar menus added comments via disqus added google analytics

Withdrawal of Non Registered Mutual Funds

I think this is the right time to withdraw my non-registered mutual fund. With the Santa Claus rally and with the markets breaking all time highs, I’ve made a considerable profit. I’ve started with this non-registered mutual fund last Sep2015, barely 3 months after we arrived in Canada. I am still a newbie that time, I didn’t know the difference between non-registered and registered, and I didn’t know that certain mutual funds have high MER (Management Expense Ratio).
